engines which to use Hi I have a cf 250 with slant four petrol, with four speed box with overdrive.also I have spare and was running fine when I took it out a 2.3 Opel diesel with five speed zf box which came out of a recovery truck, thing is I have never drove a beddy with Opel diesel so I don't really know about their reliability or noise factor. One more thing is can you put Opel diesel on my four speed box with over drive, which engine is best and in what box combination?---------------------- | Sun 17 Mar 2013 @ 12:22 |

Which engine. Hi bedford241,I think I would choose to fit the Opel diesel with the four speed overdrive gearbox, because you are getting overdrive in third as well as fourth you have effectively six gears plus the ablity to switch out of overdrive with out changeing down the box. The only problem with fitting the overdrive box is that you will need a different bell housing as the slant bell housing does not fit the upright opel engine. You will have to find out if the bedford box will fit onto the zf bell housing. If it does then your are laughing. Regards Davie. A Scot Lost in the Valley's. | Sun 17 Mar 2013 @ 17:39 |

Both bell housings are available but hard to find. you will also need the clutch fork/ thrust bearing and speedo cable, any wiring will have to be extended as well... 1 thing to check on the 5speed ZF box is the ratios of the gears which should be on a plate fitted to the side of said gearbox. there are 2 main types which are identified by the 5th gear ratio. if the ratio is 1:1 then you have a crawler box as fitted to twin-wheeled pick ups to carry heavy loads, if its .85:1 then its the overdrive style box witch is the most desirable of the 2 Fitting the Opel engine will need either the front cross-member be change or new engine mounts fitted, then you have to prop to replace or adapt. the rad will need changing along with the wiring in the engine bay..gearbox cross-member will need to be relocated/ exhaust down pipe and clutch cable needs replacing. theses are a few of things you need to do and you will find that your driving in the slow lane most of the time as the Opel engine is lacking power. depending on which diff you have you mite never use the 5th gear.. | Sun 17 Mar 2013 @ 18:04 |
